Today I have half a day of work rebuilding a gate. It is January, it is dark, it is cold and it is wet. I will build the gate frame in my shop and limit the time I spend in the elements. I told the client I would get to this today. It is a replacement gate for a dog run.
The best gate design that has with stood the test of time:
Use 2x4 materials to assemble a frame, with an “X” brace from corner to corner. The point of intersection in the center of the “X” brace is mortised. All joints are a “compression fit” and fasten with screws. I use heavy duty hinges that I attach with carriage bolts to the gate with a corresponding hinge pin lagged into the post. A another feature is a stop on the post to keep the gate from swinging past the close position and bending the gate latch over time. I fasten the fence boards with stainless steel ring shank nails, the screws are rated for exterior, carriage bolts are hot dipped galvanized.
While I am in the shop I will prime a new door for the basement here at world head quarters of A Carpenter, also I will prep the shop for a welding project I have scheduled for next week.
If you have any questions about anything at all please feel free to ask my opinion. I will gladly share my thoughts. Peace.
